Getting Started by Publishing

What should be done before continuing?

You should have a developed site.

How do I get my site on the World Wide Web?

A site is placed on the Web in a step known as publishing.  Publishing is the means of transferring your files to a computer that is accessible to the Internet.

How do I publish to the Public (www) Server for the first time using the CMS?

Publishing to any server using the CMS is based on the workflow associated with your site.  If you have an immediate workflow, the page is published immediately.  If you have an approval workflow, the page is published after the Content Manger has approved the page.

How do I publish to the Public (www) Server for the first time using Front Page?

Publishing to the Public (www or white) Server is accomplished using FrontPage Publishing Wizard.  This step is generally done only once.  From the File Menu, select Publish Web, and specify "http://www.ucok.edu/url".  The first time you publish you will want to specify "Publish all pages, overwriting...".  After this, your changes will be made directly on the server and you will not be required to publish again and again.

How can I tell if my publish worked successfully?

You can tell if the publish was successful by opening the site in a browser.  Run your browser and enter the URL assigned for your account.

Where can I get help if the publish was not successful or if something doesn't work?

Visit the Publishing services page of Web Services for assistance with unsuccessful publishing and elements that are not working.

What if I need to change something after reviewing the site in a browser?

Open the web using FrontPage and make the corrections or adjustments.

What do I do if my page takes a long time to come up (load)?

If your page takes more that 15-20 seconds to load, check your graphic sizes.  A large graphic file will slow your site extremely.  If your page doesn't have graphics, see the Solutions page for more assistance.

What comes after publishing my site?

Maintaining a site requires frequent updates to the site.  Keeping information up to date is a critical part of using the Web.  You will now need to water and feed your plant in order to get it to bloom.

There, you've done it!  You have a great site available for use.  Now you are ready to develop additional elements.
